The Nigerian Customs Service has appealed to the National Assembly and the Federal Government to lift tax waivers on local companies producing carbonated drinks.

The Comptroller General, Colonel Hameed Ali (Retired), made the call on Thursday while addressing the Senate Joint Committee on Finance and National Planning on the projection for the 2021-2023 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP).

Colonel Ali says broadening the excise tax net to include carbonated drinks will help in boosting revenue generation.

The President of the Senate, who declared the Public Hearing open, expressed shock over the revelation and requested for the situation to be reviewed immediately.
