Border reopening: Nigeria, Benin agree on anti-smuggling measures

by Kunle Awosiyan

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the country’s neighbours that Nigeria will forge a common understanding
with them on crucial issues, including security, trade and development.

He spoke on Tuesday when he received President Patrice Talon of Republic of Benin, at State House Abuja. He emphasized that the survival of the her neighbours would also ensure Nigeria’s well being.

This is the first visit of the Beninoise President to Nigeria since President Buhari reopened the country’s land borders late last year. President Buhari’s reference to good neighbourliness maybe an allusion to this fact

To buttress the point he is saying both countries must continue to engage in the crucial issues of security, trade and development no matter what irritations may arise

President Tallon on his part is diplomatically pointing out that the huge challenges of 2020 may remain in 2021 but the relationship between both neighbours must remain cordial.
