Trump’s impeachment trial: Senate divided along party lines

by Kunle Awosiyan

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday, voted largely along party lines on the impeachment trial of ex-president Donald Trump over a charge of inciting the deadly assault on the Capitol,

The Senate voted 56-44 to proceed to the first-ever trial of a former president.

The Impeachment trial is largely believed to be a move by Democrats to disqualify Trump from ever again holding public office, but Tuesday’s outcome suggests they face long odds.

Only six Republican senators joined Democrats to vote in favor of allowing the trial to take place, far short of the 17 needed to secure a conviction.
