A major oil spill has occurred at an oil pipeline near Agbura Community in Yenagoa local Government Area; discharging large volume of crude oil into the River and creeks.

The spill is said to be impacting negatively on some communities including Otuokpoti in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

The spill is alleged to have occurred from an oil facility belonging to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), operating in the area.

According to the people, the spill was discovered in the early hours of Wednesday, when they noticed large volume of crude oil floating on the river.

While some of the community folks recount their losses and the negative impacts the oil spill will cause to their means of livelihoods, others see the spill as source of business, as residents from affected Communities pull their canoes through the Ekoli river to the spill sight to scoop the crude oil into drums and gallons.

An Environmental Activist, and Head of Environmental Rights Action, ERA Yenagoa field office, Comrade Alagoa Morris described it as a major spill and called on regulators to swing into action and contain the situation, followed with immediate clean up exercise.
