Debate on section 52 sub section 3 of Electoral Act amendment bill degenerate to a rowdy session in the Senate on Thursday.

The rowdy session followed the controversial passage of an amendment that INEC may transmit election results electronically where practicable provided it is adjudged adequate by the Nigerian Communications Commission or approved by the National Assembly.

The amendment which was put forward by Senator Abdullahi Sabi was put to a voice vote and surprisingly passed by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, a decision that did not down well with others.

This is in spite of Senator Akpan Bassey raising a point of order to retain the provision as contained in the act.

But in a turn of events, after a brief closed session Senate Minority leader, Enyinnanya Abaribe, coming under order 73, challenged the ruling of the Senate President calling for a division.

The Senate is currently voting on whether or not to retain the provisions of the electoral act on electronic transmission of election results.
