ECOWAS takes hard stance on Mali, cuts economic ties

by Kunle Awosiyan

The Economic Community for West African States ECOWAS is insisting on the return of democratic institutions in Mali and the release of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and all those arrested during the recent Coup d’etat in the West African country.

The subregional body is also cutting off economic ties with Mali, with exceptions granted to movement of staple foods, fuel and medication, for the sake of the people.

The West African leaders adopted these resolutions at a virtual ECOWAS Extraordinary Session on the Situation in Mali on Thursday.
