COVID-19: Why Rural Communities Lack Interest In Vaccination-Temitayo

by Kunle Awosiyan

A Public Health Specialist,  Aderemi Temitayo,  from the University of Ibadan has said that the lack of interest of rural communities in the Covid-19 vaccination is due to misinformation.

The public health specialist said this on Tuesday as he called for appropriate awareness on the benefits of the vaccine. He said that proper education and orientation in rural communities would go a long way in setting information right amongst this set of people.

According to him, a large number of people get stuck with information from wrong sources without proper questioning.

Temitayo who spoke at a Webinar organised by the Gabriel Ajama Foundation encouraged state agencies to partner with NGOs and Health sectors so that more rural communities would accept the COVID-19 vaccination.

In his words, “Establish avenues such as surveys, focus groups or town halls to hear from district, county and local leaders need to understand the unique reasons for hesitancy within specific communities and develop targeted approaches. They must create a unified, bipartisan message to resonate across ideological lines and unite state and local leaders on vaccine and public health messaging.

He noted that while agencies had been working to educate all towards the vaccine, a lot still need to be done to correct wrong notion towards the vaccine especially in rural communities.

He applauded Gabriel Ajama Foundation towards its course to rural communities, saying that  more energy should be dissipitaed on sensitisation and educaation for COVID-19 vaccination.
