The Chairman, Ad-hoc Committee on Media and Publicity of the Senate, Dayo Adeyeye, has defended the pay packages of members of the National Assembly, saying that they deserve running costs apart from the regular salaries.
Senator Adeyeye, who is representing Ekiti South, said members do not enjoy any “Jumbo Pay” contrary to popular beliefs and that Nigerians need more enlightenment about the controversial matter.
Speaking to Journalists in Ise-Ekiti, the Spokesperson of the Senate noted that public officers of lower status get adequate running costs for their duties hence, Senators deserve more for the responsibilities on their shoulders.
He explained that since Ordinary clerks have running costs in any organization, why then should people believe senators are not entitled to running costs? He asked.
According to him, there are over three thousand staff working for the National Assembly, and they are going to be paid in line with the National Assembly Service Commission.
The former Minister expressed displeasure that People don’t appreciate the role of the legislator, and that is why no matter how much they are paid, they think it is unjustified.
He however noted that with time, when the National Assembly begin to engage the Nigerian public and bring them to full Knowledge of the roles of the legislature they will begin to see why the legislators should be given the breathing space to perform their roles.
