BVAS: INEC Postpones Saturday’s Elections By One Week

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed Saturday’s governorship and state houses of assembly elections to March 18.

The postponement follows the commission’s inability to complete the reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS machines for the state elections.

The Court of Appeal on Wednesday granted INECs permission to reconfigure the BVAS, for the Governorship and State Assemblies Elections.

A three-member panel of the appellate court, led by Justice JOSEPH IKYEGH, granted leave to the applicant to configure the BVAS for the election.

The panel, however, asked INEC to upload data to the back-end server and make true certified copies to the respondents.

In its response, the commission said the ruling of the court came too late for the reconfiguration of the BVAS to be concluded.

It added that by this decision, campaigns will continue until midnight of Thursday, the 16th of March 2023 that is 24 hours before the new date for the election.
