Gabon Coup: Army Takes Over Power, Ends Ondimba’s Rule

A group of military officials from Gabon have abruptly ended the administration president Ali Bongo Ondimba.

The officers declared on national television that they were “putting an end to the current regime” and overturning the official election results that had given Ondimba a second term.

Gunfire rang out in the Gabonese capital, Libreville, during the announcement, as voting ended on Saturday, amid a statewide internet blackout and a nighttime curfew imposed by Bongo’s government.

The officials stated that all the institutions of the republic had been dissolved while cancelling the results of the referendum.

Bongo, 64, has been in power for 14 years and was first elected in 2009 after his father’s death.
