Awoniyi Makes Quick Return

Nottingham Forest forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, has started his recovery from a groin injury as the Super Eagles striker pushes to be fit for the second half of the season

Forest manager, Steve Cooper, announced in November that the striker would be out of action for some months after undergoing surgery to correct a groin injury he picked up during an international game between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia in Portugal.

After undergoing the operation, it was believed that Awoniyi was all but set to miss the 34th edition of the biennial African Association football tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football.

On Monday, the former Liverpool player on his Instagram page posted a video of himself hitting the grass running with the caption ‘He’s never late’.

While it remains unclear if the striker will be fit enough for next year’s AFCON in Ivory Coast, his return to the grass will serve as a major boost to Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, who is expected to name his final AFCON squad list latest January 3, 2024, having already submitted his provisional list to CAF.

While there’s no precise return update from his club, Awoniyi’s potential return serves as a significant boost, especially with the recent injury setback faced by Terem Moffi.

The 26-year-old forward is a key player for the City Ground side, scoring 10 league goals to help Forest achieve top-flight survival last season.

So far this season, Awoniyi has scored four goals in 10 Premier League appearances for Forest and has been hugely missed as the Premier League club have been without a win in their last five games without the Nigerian, losing four and drawing one.
