Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger sign pact to counter ECOWAS

Three military-led West African Sahel countries, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have signed a security treaty that will make them support one another against any external aggression.

They signed the treaty on Saturday, in a move that seemed to neutralise the danger posed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Recall that after the July coup in Niger, which led to the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum, ECOWAS threatened to intervene militarily.

In case of an assault, Mali and Burkina Faso have committed to helping Niger.

Even as they battle to contain rebels affiliated with al Qaeda and the Islamic State, ECOWAS and the West have lambasted the three nations for military takeovers that have damaged relations with them.

Assimi Goita, the head of the Mali junta, disclosed on X that they signed an agreement, formalising their support.
